Our Programs
At Forest City Village, we allow for plenty of freedom of movement and utilize multi-age groups in our classrooms. The primary program is for 3- to 5-year-olds, and the elementary program is for 6- to 9-year-olds, with occasional splitting into lower and upper elementary groups. Mixing ages enables the older, more socially advanced and capable children to become role models for the younger ones. A sense of community develops as younger children are aided by older ones, while older children learn patience, nurturance, and an appreciation for other perspectives through their experiences with younger peers. Chronological age grouping, as used in traditional education, fosters leadership based on outgoing personalities. In our primary classroom, even the shyest 5-year-old is looked up to as a leader by younger children and is asked for help and assistance.
Primary
At this stage of life, children possess what Maria Montessori referred to as an “absorbent mind.” They absorb information from their environment like sponges. Our Primary Program is a unique cycle of learning designed to take advantage of children’s sensitive periods. Montessori teachers guide students through lessons in practical life, sensorial activities, language, math, culture, and science. Primary students also explore the outdoor classroom with nature walks, sensory play, and child-led activities. Our unique location next to the James Memorial Library allows for frequent visits, providing excellent learning opportunities.
Elementary
At this stage in development, children have a great hunger for knowledge, understanding, and justice. Students at this level yearn to become self-sufficient. They transition from concrete experiences into the world of abstract thinking. Imagination enables students to make connections across time and space. Elementary students learn how the Earth was formed, how plant and animal life are deeply intertwined, and how humans have met their basic needs. A strong emphasis is placed on basic academics as well: reading, writing, grammar, math, music, and science. This age is an important period for both mental and emotional growth.
Our Montessori teachers guide students through lessons in individual and small group settings. Students also gain a deep understanding of how the outdoor environment connects to their academic lessons. To encourage integration of their learning, lessons are frequently conducted outside. It takes a village to raise a child, and that includes their education! We encourage experts from the community to share their knowledge and provide elementary students with new perspectives.
